Frida Pot Preparation and Care

We’ve been getting many questions regarding one of our most popular products, the Frida kitchenware line. Some customers have been asking about the history of these unique pots and pans while others would like to be reminded exactly of how to prepare and clean this cookware. We thought it best to answer all of your questions in one place! If you’ve never heard of our Frida pots, stop into the store or take a look at the selection available in our online catalog.

About: Black clay cookware can be traced back 700 years to objects found in pre-Columbian archaeological sites. Still made in the traditional manner, mostly by women, each piece is shaped by hand. There are no toxins used. There is no lead or glaze. The smooth finish is the result of hand-burnishing riverside with stones, therefore no two are alike! Imperfections are normal, as well as the clay changing to a terracotta color when heated over time.

Use: Ideal for cooking and serving. Can be placed on open fire. Oven, microwave and stovetop safe. We recommend using a heat diffuser when cooking on an electric range. Do not expose to sudden changes in temperature, such as moving from the refrigerator to a hot oven, placing it in a preheated oven or placing it on a cold surface when it is hot.

Before using: Season before use by filling three-quarters full of water and placing in an oven for 30 minutes at 400ºF UNCOVERED. Do not preheat oven when placing pot in oven! This usually seals the cookware, although a complete seal is sometimes achieved only after it has been used several times for cooking. Boiling milk in the vessel may help if you still find it to be too porous, but this is rarely necessary.

Cleaning:After seasoning, the cookware cleans easily. A quick soak and wipe down with a sponge or damp rag is all you need to clean it. The dishwasher and abrasive cleaners are NOT recommended.
